A dining table that is slightly too big ruins a room: chairs that will not pull out, and a squeeze to the kitchen. Size is mostly one rule - chair clearance.
The chair clearance rule
Leave at least 90 cm from the table edge to the wall (or other furniture) on every side where chairs pull out. 100-110 cm is better if people walk behind seated guests. 80 cm is the hard minimum - below that, people climb out sideways.
A 1.8 m table with 90 cm each side needs 3.6 m in that direction. A 1.2 m round table needs 3.0 m. That is why many NZ rooms that look like a six-seater live better as a four-seater or an extension table.
Shape: rectangular vs round vs oval for small rooms
Rectangular tables seat the most people per square metre and can sit against a wall. Round or oval tables suit small square rooms (no corners to catch). A 1.0 m round seats four; 800-900 mm of edge per person is the comfortable minimum.
For small NZ kitchens and open-plan units, a round table around 90–100 cm diameter or a rectangular table around 120 × 80 cm is usually the sweet spot for four people without dominating the space. Anything much bigger starts to feel like the table is the room.

A rough guide: allow 600 mm of table edge per seated person for comfortable dining. These are comfortable numbers - you can squeeze in more, but elbows start to compete and the whole meal feels tighter.

Extension tables for NZ homes
Extension (extendable) tables are a popular solution in smaller New Zealand homes - they live compact for everyday use and expand when you host. Common formats include butterfly extension (leaf stored inside), self-storing extension, and separate added leaves. The key question is what the compact size is - if the everyday size is still too big for the room, an extension table does not help much. Always measure the table at its smallest configuration first, then check whether the extended size works for your largest typical gathering.

Tables up to 140 cm long - compact enough to leave proper chair clearance in most NZ dining rooms and kitchen-dining areas, sorted narrowest first.

Before you buy
Allow at least 90 cm from table edge to wall or furniture on every chair-pull side. Choose shape based on your room shape - round and oval work well in small square rooms. Allow 600 mm of table edge per seated person. For hosting flexibility, an extension table in the right compact size can work well. Always verify dimensions on the retailer listing - always measure your specific product, as dimensions can vary between configurations and finishes.
